Dedicated Gatineau Circumcision Clinic for Boys of Any Age

We are often asked about the best age for a boy’s circumcision, and if at a certain point a child becomes too old to get circumcised. The answer to the question is that circumcision is available for boys and men of all ages, from infant to adult, and our Gatineau circumcision doctor always perform the operation with all possible care.

If you have a newborn boy and plan to have him circumcised we encourage you to book an appointment as soon as possible, as it is better to have the circumcision earlier in your child’s life.

If, however, your son is no longer a baby, a virtually painless circumcision can still be performed with the Pollock Technique™ at our Gatineau clinic serving all Ontario and Quebec.

There are no age restrictions for circumcision. Our clients include a wide range of ages from infants to seniors, and Gentle Procedures is the only dedicated circumcision clinic in the Capital Region offering circumcision for boys and teens as a routine procedure with the Pollock Technique™.

Many our clients come from Ottawa, northern Ontario, and beyond, to our Gatineau area clinic.

Just let us know if you are travelling overnight for the surgery, and we can recommend local accommodation for you and your boy as needed.

Getting Circumcised as a Teenager

Should your older boy or teenage son require circumcision, or if you are a youth seeking more information, we encourage you to explore more of the detail available on our website (and others) and to contact us for a consultation in our Gatineau clinic when you are ready.

Before the circumcision operation, Doctor Slim will explain the risks and benefits of the procedure. Whether you are planning to have your son circumcised or you’re pursuing circumcision for yourself, you will want to make a fully informed decision.

Please read about the Pollock Technique™ that we employ for all circumcisions at our clinic. Dr. Slim is fully certified in the use of this virtually painless surgical method and have trained hands-on with Dr. Pollock in his clinics. Please note that if you are a minor teen you will need parental consent for any eventual procedure, and parents will be involved in a pre-procedure consultation with you as well.

Circumcision for Phimosis Treatment

Teenage and pre-adolescent circumcision is sometimes prescribed as treatment for phimosis and certain other conditions that may become problematic as the boy matures.

In these cases, the age of the boy is not material, as the need to resolve a medical issue is what drives the circumcision decision. Pollock Technique™ circumcision is a good option when it has been determined that circumcision is the best treatment for a boy’s phimosis.

Whatever your reasons for contacting our clinic, our professional medical team is ready to assist you in achieving your personal objectives and resolving medical issues through circumcision safely and as comfortably as possible.

Circumcision for Children – Getting Circumcised Before Adolescence

Circumcision is also routinely done for older boys at Gentle Procedures Clinics. No medical referral is required. Your primary care doctor may refer you to our clinic for circumcision for your boy but your doctor does not need to make a referral for you.

If you have questions regarding the appropriateness of circumcision for your son or any questions regarding specific details of the process at our clinic, you may choose to first book a consultation for your son before you schedule the circumcision appointment.

To arrange a consultation with our circumcision doctors please call us at 343-777-0440, or use the Appointment Request Form.

What are the benefits of circumcision for children and adolescents?

There are some potential benefits from getting circumcised as a child or teenager. Here are some examples:

Circumcision lowers the risk of penile cancer, although the risk is always quite low.

Boys and men who are circumcised have less chance of getting a sexually transmitted disease (STD). An STD is a disease you catch from sexual contact. An example is HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that causes AIDS.

Males who are circumcised have a slightly lower risk of getting a urinary tract infection. That’s an infection affecting the bladder, kidneys, or the tubes that urine goes through as it leaves the body.

If you’re circumcised, there’s no worry that you’ll get an infection of the foreskin.

Circumcision means you’ll never get phimosis — a condition in which very tight foreskin gets stuck to the penis.

The Circumcision Procedure for Children and Adolescents

Circumcision for teens and younger boys is a routine procedure at Gentle Procedures Clinic. We appreciate that it can lead to anxiety and concerns for boys and parents so our procedures include communication among the parents, patients, and our team before and after the operation. The overview below provides some detail and your doctor will answer your specific questions as well.
This information will help you understand what you can expect and it will help you safely prepare for your child’s surgery. The more you (and your son) understand exactly what is planned, the more comfortable you will be during the circumcision procedure and recovery period of several days. Talk to your boy about the surgery. Tell your son that the surgery will remove the skin on the head of his penis. Older boys will understand well and children will appreciate a simpler version of the reasons.
Plan for your child’s recovery time. He may need more of your time right after the surgery, both for care and for comfort. Your child will probably be able to go back to school or daycare in 2 or 3 days. The presence of a parent is very helpful, for younger boys especially.
We will call you the day before the circumcision appointment to confirm the time and date of your child’s surgery and answer any questions. Remember to follow your doctor’s instructions about your child taking or stopping medicines before surgery. This includes over-the-counter supplements or painkillers.

Have your child take a bath or shower before you come in. For younger boys, you can bring a favourite stuffed animal or small toy if this comforts them. For an older boy getting circumcised we recommend a book, music player, I-pad, or tablet with games/music.

A parent or legal guardian must accompany your child to the clinic. If both parents will not be present you will be asked to have written permission from the absent parent to confirm that they are aware of the planned operation and have agreed to have it done.

A local anesthetic is given by injection through the skin near the base of the penis. During a circumcision, the foreskin is removed from the head of the penis (glans). The surgery will take just a few minutes.

Even though the boy having the procedure will be awake, there will be no pain while it is being performed. If your boy can distract himself with music or otherwise the brief surgery will be quickly completed with little stress.

After the procedure, some discomfort is expected when the local anesthetic wears off. There are pain-killers that relieve any pain or discomfort and full post-operative care instructions will be given to you.

Take care to regulate the dosage and follow the doctor’s instructions.

What to expect after an older boy’s circumcision

Circumcision for older children who are not babies will entail a recovery period with reduced activity levels. Your son will leave our clinic a few hours after the operation, and guidance and follow-up continues afterwards, with written and verbal instructions on how to provide care after the circumcision. Dr. Slim will be reachable 24-hours a day during the period immediately after the procedure so that he can react fast in the unlikely event of a serious complication.

Promote healing

The goal is to minimize your boy’s discomfort and promote healing. You will be shown how to reduce the risk of infection and informed of warning signs to watch for in case of any complications.

Our doctor will be available by phone after surgery and will respond quickly to questions or concerns.

Your son will require your attention in the days immediately after his circumcision.

Rest after surgery for a few days

You will likely be able to take your child home 2 to 4 hours after the surgery. Encourage extra rest the first day. Most children can be more active on the day after surgery. Follow your doctor’s instructions about when your child can do vigorous exercise. This includes sports, running, and physical education.

When you leave the clinic, you will get more information about how to take care of your child at home. The doctor will tell you when your child can start normal activities again.

When should you call the clinic?

  • You have questions or concerns before or after the circumcision.
  • You don’t understand how to prepare your child for the surgery.
  • Your child becomes ill before the surgery (such as fever, flu, or a cold).
  • You need to reschedule or have changed your mind about your child having the surgery.
